Despite its noise--the world is listening," said J.Elle, to an auditorium of over 70 teens on Saturday at the Canyon Crest Academy 8th Annual Youth Writing Conference. "Kids --ALL of them-- need to understand they are powerful." J.Elle's 45-minute talk covered tips for finding their voice, developing vividly real characters, and being persistent.

Claire Stetzer at Bloomsbury has acquired, at auction, J. Elle’s middle grade debut. A TASTE OF MAGIC, the first of two books set at the Park Row Magic Academy, stars a Black girl who enrolls in an inner-city magical academy hidden in the back of a beauty shop and must fight to keep it open after redistricting and gentrification threaten to close it down. Publication is slated for 2022.

Elle's tweet about her birthday exploded, garnering ~60,000 impressions and #1 New Release status in Teen & YA African American Fiction on Amazon, a record set for a book without cover art which echoes the enthusiasm for this hotly anticipated debut. On Elle's birthday Wings of Ebony also held #15 in YA Teen Super Hero fiction and #41 in YA contemporary fantasy overall. Cover art will be unveiled soon and the huge influx of birthday pre-order buzz is expected to be only the tip of the iceberg.

Publishers Weekly asked debut author J.Elle and editorial director Denene Millner to interview each other about J.Elle’s forthcoming YA fantasy novel, ‘Wings of Ebony,’ whose cover is revealed here for the first time, and the joy of celebrating Black girl magic. The book marks the first YA acquisition for Millner’s eponymous imprint, which focuses on titles by African American authors and illustrators for readers of all ages.
